The UK Medical regulator has approved Pfizer/BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for use and it will be made available across the UK from the second week of December.

In doing so, the UK has become the first country in the world to judge this particular vaccine safe for use, paving the way for mass vaccination. So, what is the next step in this welcome immunisation process, who qualifies for the jab and is it safe?

What now?

The NHS are now putting extensive preparations into action to provide the very best level of care and support to all those eligible for vaccination.

Who is eligible for vaccination?

Initially, care home residents, health and social care staff, people aged 80 and over, and the clinically extremely vulnerable will be included in the Priority Groups to receive the vaccine, before it is offered more widely.

Does everyone want it?

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that vaccination is the best defence against serious infection. Whilst many people are keen for an injection as soon as possible, others are worried about having something new and unknown injected into their bodies.

Is it safe?

Dr June Raine, Chief Executive of the MHRA, which approved the vaccine, said: “I would really like to emphasise that the highest standards of scrutiny, of safety and of effectiveness and quality have been met, international standards, and so there should be real confidence in the rigour of our approval. More than that, our Commision on Human Medicines has scrutinised every piece of data too, so there should be no doubt whatever that this is a very safe and highly effective vaccine. It will help us turn the corner.”

Stay safe and play your part!

The UK’s vaccination programme is a huge milestone in the fight to overcome the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. To further aid this effort, it is crucial that everyone continues to play their part, working together to stay safe and abiding by the necessary localised restrictions to further suppress the virus and enable our NHS to carry out their vital work without becoming overwhelmed.
