We recently received an update that a preliminary analysis by independent experts shows that a first effective vaccine has been found to prevent more than 90% of people from getting COVID-19.

Pfizer and BioNTech, who are the developers of this particular vaccine, announced:
“Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 Vaccine Trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19. With today’s news, we are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis.”

Inarguably, this is very positive news and a more than welcome turn of events, with almost every scientist and doctor around the world agreeing that a vaccine would be the best way of halting the COVID-19 pandemic and saving lives.

How Does A Vaccine Work?

By tricking the body into thinking that it has been infected, vaccines encourage the immune system to produce antibodies that then protect the person against genuine infection. Once enough people have these antibodies, spreading of the virus is prevented.

Pfizer And BioNTech’s COVID-19 Vaccine

This potential COVID-19 vaccine was found to be more than 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 in participants without evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection in the first interim efficacy analysis.

The study enrolled 43,538 participants, with 42% of these having diverse backgrounds, and no serious safety concerns have been observed. The analysis evaluated 94 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in participants.

The clinical trial is to continue through to final analysis at 164 confirmed cases in order to collect further data and characterise the vaccine’s performance against other study endpoints.

What’s Next?

Further good news is that there are other vaccines currently in testing across the globe that work in a very similar way to that of Pfizer and BioNTech’s possible COVID-19 vaccine.

Despite this positive update, there remain huge challenges ahead, so what can we all do to prevent the spread of COVID-19 whilst we eagerly await further news on vaccines?

It is crucial that we all stay safe during this time by working together and protecting the most vulnerable individuals. With one caveat, we can ensure that we are all doing everything that we can by following the current measures and rules that are in place and by maintaining effective hygiene practices.

When it comes to hand sanitisers, be sure to use an alcohol-free product.

Avoid Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitisers

Alcohol-based hand sanitisers should be avoided at all costs. There are many other hygiene products readily available, such as NewGenne’s Foam Hand Rub which is proven to kill membrane-bound viruses like the COVID-19 coronavirus.
